Chennai being the capital of Tamil Nadu is also a political hot spot of the state. It houses the executive and legislative headquarters of the government of Tamil Nadu.

Legislative Assembly

Chennai has three Parliamentary constituencies – Chennai North, Chennai Central and Chennai South. The current MPs are C Kuppusami, Dayanidhi Maran and T R Baalu respectively. The executive and legislative headquarters of the government of Tamil Nadu are housed in Chennai. Chennai elects 18 MLAs to the state legislative Assembly.


Chennai Corporation

The Chennai Metropolitan area includes Chennai city and the districts of Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur. Chennai Corporation, which takes care of the civic functions of the city, consists of 155 councillors. The Mayor is the head of the Corporation. There are 10 Standing Committees. The Mayor and the Deputy Mayor preside over these Standing Committees. The town municipalities govern the suburbs while panchayats are in-charge of the smaller ones.

Madras High Court

The Madras High Court is the highest judicial authority in the state. The jurisdiction of the High Court extends across Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

Greater Chennai Police

Greater Chennai Police department is in charge of the law and order of the state. The Commissioner of Police heads the city police force. Among the 121 police stations in the city, 15 of them are ISO 9001:2000 certified. The Chennai City Traffic Police manages the city’s traffic while the Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur police departments control the metropolitan suburbs.
