Anna University

Anna University came into existence on 4th September 1978 as a unitary type of University. It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology and allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society. Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained there from, it fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities.

The university is proud for the fact that the former President of India – Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was a student of this university and is now a visiting professor.

Located in the southern part of the city of Madras (Chennai), the University's main campus extends over 100 hectares abutting the Adyar River on the north and Raj Bhavan on the south. The Madras Institute of Technology at Chrompet constitutes the second campus of the University which extends over 20 hectares. Both the campuses have a variety of buildings serving the various needs of the University community. A third campus extending over 80 hectares is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar.

The varsity offers undergraduate, post graduate programs in the field of engineering and technology. It also offers very competitive atmosphere for research activities.

Anna University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Partner of UNESCO International Center for Engineering Education (UICEE).

Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research

Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research (Bharath University) was established in the year 1984, and acquired deemed to be University status in the year 2003 by University Grants Commission (UGC).

The university has four campuses namely Bharath Institute of Science and Technology (Selaiyur, Chennai), Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital (Pallikaranai, Chennai), Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital (Chromepet, Chennai) and Sree Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences at Pondicherry).


IIT Madras

The seed of IIT Madras was sown during Pt.Jawahar Lal Nehru's visit to Federal Republic of Germany in 1956.The federal government offered assistance to open a technological institute in India that led to Indo-German agreement in Bonn in 1958, wherein figured the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. The first Indo-German Agreement provided for the services of German professors and 5 foremen, training facilities for 20 Indian faculty members and the supply of scientific and technical equipment for the establishment of the Central Workshop and 20 laboratories at IIT Madras.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras was formally inaugurated by Prof.Humayun Kabir, the Union Minister for Scientific and Cultural Affairs in 1959. Dr.A.Lakshmanaswamy assumed office as the first Chairman of the Board of Governors and Dr.B.Sengupto as the first Director of the Institute.The Institute was declared as an 'Institute of National Importance' by the Parliament of India in 1961.

The visit of President of Germany, Dr.Heinrich Luke in 1962 added new dimension to the IIT Madras in the form of Indo German technical assistant programme and Indo German relationship.

Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute

Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute (Deemed University) constitutes of two colleges, namely; Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College, established in 1088 and Thai Moogambiagai Dental College, started in 1991.

Deemed University status has been given to Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and University Grants Commission.

The University has three main Faculties - Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Medicine and Dental Sciences and Faculty of Humanities and Sciences.

Meenakshi Academy of Higher Education and Research

Meenakshi Academy of Higher Education and Research (Meenakshi University) was formed on 14th June 2004 on behalf of Meenakshi Ammal Trust which was founded in the year 1983. The trust is involved in various educational activities like giving awards, scholarships, grants and aids to Indian citizens for study and research in the fields of education, Indian culture and fine arts etc.

Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology

Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (now known as Saveetha University) was established on behalf of Saveetha Medical & Educational Trust in 1988. The institute was the brain child of Dr. N.M.Veeraiyan, the founder president of the trust, who had a vision to build a model Dental College for the betterment of Dental education in this country.

After the establishment of Dental College, the trust planned for establishing a Basic Sciences Block which came into existence in 1989. In 1992 the sophisticated OP department/clinics came into existence, which was followed shortly by the farewell of our 1st Batch of students in October 1993.

In 2005 Saveetha Institute was granted deemed university status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) which paves the way for autonomy in designing courses and improving the academic standards.

At present, Saveetha University is offering graduate course in Dentistry with specialization in few of the new subjects like Fundamentals in Dentistry, Dental Armamentarium, Behavioral Sciences, Forensic Odontology, Implantology and Aesthetic Dentistry etc. The introduction of these new specialized topics has created enormous scope for the dental students and professionals in India.

Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute

Sri Ramachandra University(formerly known as Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute) has been established by Sri Ramachandra Education & Health Trust under the leadership of Shri N.P.V. Ramaswamy Udayar. The varsity is located at Porur, Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

The institute received the deemed university status in 1994 owing to its academic excellence in the field of medical education and research in the country. Today, Sri Ramachandra University is regarded as one of the top institutes for medical education, research and patient care. It has international collaboration with various medical institutions of importance.

Sri Ramachandra University has 9 Constituent Colleges with over 45 Departments that offer about 96 courses.

The varsity offers courses through both regular ad distance mode. The regular courses include: Certificate Course, Undergraduate Courses, Postgraduate Courses, Postgraduate Diploma Courses, Postgraduate Dental Courses, Postgraduate Degree Clinical Courses, Postgraduate Degree Courses in Basic Medical Sciences Higher Speciality Courses and Ph.D etc.

Tamil Nadu Dr. M G R Medical University

The Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University has been established by the Government of Tamil Nadu under an act of the Legislative assembly. This affiliating University started functioning from July 1988 and is governed by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, Act, 1987.

The varsity is situated in Southern part of the City of Chennai in the State of Tamil Nadu, South India. It is about 6 Km from the Chennai International & National Airport and about 12km from the Chennai Central Railway Station.

Dr.M.G.R.Medical University is a premier Medical Universality of India named after the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, late Dr.M.G.Ramachandran (M.G.R) and it is the second largest Health Sciences University of our country.

The university has the power to grant affiliation to new medical and paramedical colleges (government or self – financing) in the state of Tamil Nadu; it also awards degrees (until 1988, all degrees of Health Sciences were awarded by the University of Madras) to the successful candidates.

Besides, medical and paramedical courses, the University also regulates dental education in the state. It also regulates education in the Indian systems of medicine including Ayurveda, Siddha etc. The University also promotes research and development in the field of medical sciences and allied fields.

Tamil Nadu Open University

Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) has been established under an Act of the Tamil Nadu State Assembly in October 2002. The varsity started its operation in 2003. Initially it offered 20 programmes under various fields. At present, TNOU is offering some more than 60 Programmes in various study disciplines.

TNOU is the only institution in Tamil Nadu eligible for accessing the scholarships available through the South Asian Foundation (SAF). In other words, TNOU students are the only students in Tamil Nadu to get this scholarship worth Rs. 4, 500 each.

Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University

Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (shortly known as TANUVAS) was established in the year 1989 under an act of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The varsity became the first veterinary and animal sciences university in the whole of Asia. TANUVAS is an autonomous institution governed by its Board of Management which regulates the polices in accordance with the provision of act and statues of the varsity.

The history of TANUVAS dates back to 1876 when the Madras Veterinary College was started as an Agricultural School in Chennai to offer diploma and certificate course in the field of veterinary and animal sciences. Later on the school was upgraded to a college in 1903 and was called as the Madras Veterinary College. Prior to the establishment of TANUVAS, Madras Veterinary College was affiliated to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. After TANUVAS came into existence, the college became a constituent college of the varsity.

The main campus TANUVAS is located at Madhavaram Milk Colony, Chennai - 600 051, India. The prime objectives of TANUVAS are to impart education, to ensure advancement of learning and prosecution of research and to undertake extension to rural people in cooperation with the government departments in different branches of veterinary and animal sciences.

The Tamilnadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University

The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University has been established by the Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature. It was inaugurated by His Excellency Thiru K.R. Narayanan, President of India on September 20th 1997. The University started functioning from 03.10.1997.

The main objectives behind the establishment of this law university were to impart quality legal education and to promote the knowledge of law among masses.

The Law University is also promoting the skills of advocacy among the law students and research scholars so as to serve the society with a sense of responsibility while providing legal services, making legislation and suggesting law reforms.

Madras University

The University of Madras was among the three oldest universities established by the British India. The proposal for setting up a varsity in South India was initiated in the year 1839. It was only in January 1840 that the University Board was constituted with Mr. George Norton as its President.

In 1854 after a gap of 14 years the Government of India formulated a systematic educational policy for India and as a sequel to this on 5th September 1857 by an act of legislative council of India, the University was developed on the lines of London University.

At present, the University has a jurisdiction that is confined to 3 districts of Tamil Nadu – Chennai, Thrivallur and Kanchipuram.

Apart from teaching, research activities in Arts, Humanities, Science, Management and Technology are the main portals at the University. A number of institutions affiliated to Madras University Concentrate in research activities.

The varsity offers teaching and research in 4 Campuses of Madras University. The University Department of study and Research which are 68 Departments spread over in 4 Campuses organized into 18 Schools offer Post Graduate Courses in respective specialization part time and full time Ph.D. Programmes, Diploma and Certificate Programmes.

SRM University

In the academic scenario of Chennai, the SRM University has opened up a new horizon. Inception seed of this university germinated in 1968, with foundation of Florence Nightingale Primary School by Mr. T.R. Pachamuthu, the founding chairman of the SRM Group. Since 1985, the SRM University started spreading its wings by establishing the SRM Engineering College in Kattankulathur and in the forthcoming years this institution kept on opening various centers but in 2003-04, this organization received the status of SRM Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India.
