Ajith Kumar was in Chennai for a short break in between his inaugural race at Silverstone, which took place on April 18 and the forthcoming races at Morocco on May 2.

Ajith took time off to answer a few questions pertaining to his current year''s race season at FIA 2010 Formula 2 Championship.

What is your assessment of yourself and your performance after the first two races?

I was pleased with my performance in the 2nd qualifying session. My main agenda for the race weekend at Silverstone was to finish both the races. Race 1 went very well. In Race 2 my car had a problem with the turbo. Around the 17th lap the engine lost revs completely. I had no other choice but to continue and finish the race. In the process I finished 2 laps down. My timing in race 2 was 1.5 secs slower compared to race 1. I was more concerned about finishing the race and gain as much track time as possible in the car.

How do you manage your schedules, especially while working in both Tamil and Telugu?

Right now I don’t sign too many films. I only sign two films at a time and so it is quite easy to manage. And I work for 20 -22 days a month so this way I always have some free days in case someone meets and wants to finish any backlogs. I don’t work like before and am very choosy about films these days. In fact I haven’t signed anything new as of now. I have put everything on hold for the time being and am waiting for something exciting, a film that gives me a really good character. So it is always easy to manage and I have got used to working in both the languages and divide my time equally between Chennai and Hyderabad.

Kamal Hassan unravels Unnaipol Oruvan

Why a remake of a Hindi film?

Why does someone make a film based on epics like ‘Ramayana’ and ‘The Mahabharata’? I mean just about everybody knows the storyline isn’t it? Even in English, Shakespeare’s plays were made into films over and over again and even then whenever a Shakespeare’s play is made into a film with new actors there are stores all over in the media about the film. Even take the case of a comedian. The same joke cracked by a different comedian gives it a different momentum altogether. Similarly, it is the case with this film. It is all a question of interpretation and ‘A Wednesday’ was a small film that went on to be a big film. See, even True Lies (a popular English film) was a remake of a French film. If the producers thought that it isn’t worth to remake it they wouldn’t have done it right? In that case it would have been confined to the French audiences only. See, everybody may not be as informed as the media, but ‘A Wednesday’ being a great film that it is was appreciated by the Hindi audience and we want to present a film of such quality to the Tamil and Telugu audiences as well.

Why did you wish to make a different film like this?

First of all, I would like to thank the audience for making us big stars. It is a great feeling but every now and then they should give us permissions to do such good films. They shouldn’t drown us in stardom and that is why this film and moreover this will be added value to an already successful film.

How did you happen to work for this film?

I have been friends with Kamalji for a long time and we used to discuss different projects. I also used to help Kamalji in ‘Marmayogi’. We used to share different ideas and this is one of those. One thing lead to another and Kamalji gave me an opportunity to work on this film. It is a fantastic opportunity and one of the best things that could happen to me. I am really excited about it.

There’s nothing that can stop Vikram walking on air now. He’s much excited for couple of reasons: ‘Kanthaswamy’ – His ever biggest opening with record-breaking sales releasing on August 21 and well, other one is long dream run turning into reality. It’s all about working with ace filmmaker Mani Rathnam.

So, how about Kanthaswamy?

I would say, it’s the earnest hard work of entire team that had really urged me to put more and more efforts for perfection. For sure, this would be a special film for all the buffs of Tamil Cinema and I looking out for the release as an audience as well.
